Attractive activities in Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang is a small city full of character and charm. There are just so many things to do in Luang Prabang. Being the first UNESCO site listed in the country of Laos, the town offers a spectacular array of culture, nature, and of course, mouthwatering food. Even wandering the streets you’ll get a glimpse of life here.

Visit the Kuangsi Waterfalls

 


 If you do nothing else during your time in Luang Prabang, make sure you take a trip to the Kuang Si Waterfalls. You can get there by tuk tuk, bicycle or as part of a tour, and it’s best to go in the morning before it becomes too busy. The falls are in several stages beginning with a hidden jungle plunge pool at the top (which you can climb up to), and ending with a staggering series of emerald pools at the bottom to swim in. 

 

Climb Mount Phousi

 Located in the center of town, Mount Phousi isn’t really a mountain but a very big hill. Getting to the top is not a hike but just a climb up a very long set of stairs (over 300). At the top is an old wat and 360 views of the surrounding area. Make sure to walk around all sides of the temple to get a glimpse of the Nam Khan River as well as the Mekong that snakes by. Another entrance leads down the backside of the mountain with Buddha statues along the way. One of the best times to climb the mountain is right before sunset. This gives you the opportunity to see the city and surrounding mountains with the last bit of sunlight and then watch as the sky changes into all sorts of colors. 

 

Explore Wat Xieng Thong

Wat Xieng Thong is considered as "Temple of the Golden City", it is a Buddhist temple (wat), located on the northern tip of the peninsula of Luang Phrabang, Laos. Wat Xieng Thong is one of the most important of Lao monasteries and remains a significant monument to the spirit of religion, royalty and traditional art. There are over twenty structures on the grounds including a sim, shrines, pavilions and residences, in addition to its gardens of various flowers, ornamental shrubs and trees. Mural paintings in Xieng Thong is also the special attractions here. 

 

Taste wine in Whisky Village



 Known as Ban Xang Hai, this Lao village is on way to Pak Ou Caves. The famous speciality in this village is the local wine soaked with snakes, insects and then sold in various shape bottles. Lao silks and other crafts are also sold in the village. 

 

Enjoy Lao cuisine

Lao cuisine is said to be tasty, safety and cheap. Specialities are sold in the city with good flavour and reasonable price. Besides, Laos coffee is known as the high-grade drink in the world. Along Mekong riverside, there are a lot of restaurant combining Lao and France style.  

 

Ride Elephant 

 The Elephant Park is 15km from the city, surrounded by mountains. An easy 3-hour trekking will lead you out into a local Kamu village where you get an overview of daily life and culture of this ethnic minority.local wine 

 

Luang Prabang Night Market

There are 2 - 3 market areas around Luang Prabang, the night market is the well-known place here, it is a must-visit for visitors in Luang Prabang. The night market is always full of silver souvenirs and traditional items. This is also an ideal place for buying a small gift for your friends. Besides, a lot of travellers choose Luang Prabang night market to try BBQ river fish, noodles and other street food. 

 

Explore the Chompet

You can take a boat across the Mekong to the small village of Chompet. Unlike Luang Prabang, Chompet is a peaceful place to observe village life for a day. A few small temples and a miniature version of the Pak Ou Caves make the short excursion to Chompet worth the effort.
